Life Lately: According to Pop Culture Consumption

Recapping the last 3 months could go in many different directions. What the kids have been doing, how we've been coping (or not) with the noise level of said four(!) kids, or what we've been planning. Early morning habits, social media sabbaticals and finding healthy paths forward. But instead, I'm going to recap my current life experience by what parts of pop culture I've been enjoying.

Listening:

I tend to be unfortunately late to any cultural musical phenomenon. But it feels nice to stumble on someone seemingly outside of the current fad and conveniently leaves me with years of music videos, albums and interviews to catch up on. My current catch-up, but still entirely relevant artist: Harry Styles.

Podcasts have been on hold for me since July 1.  This shift has been really positive in a lot of ways,  including bringing me back around to consuming more music (and not just Harry). Music from my high school days, specifically, has been reminding me of some of the best parts of who I've been and still am.

Reading:

Biographies have been a new category for me this summer (Bonhoeffer, and now Tim Keller). I've also circled back around to an old Darling magazine that Michael bought for me in 2016, and picked up a Traditional Home magazine at the store a few weeks ago. Not being on instagram has sent me back to more archaic sources of inspiration, and I like it here.

Surfing:

I've been awkwardly trying to google style inspiration, and it is not really working out. Some things really are better on instagram, but I'll catch up on all the style I can during my once-monthly check in.

I'm also finding myself at the end of my free reads on some interesting publications (The Economist and Le Monde) and my muses on Substack have gone paid. It's time for me to take inventory of what I do want to consume and how much I want to spend on it. The not spending anything isn't really working for me, and goes against the values I'm finding that I have regarding the Internet and free content.

Learning:

French. On Duolingo right now, but soon with a tutor.

Wearing:

All old things. The year sabbatical from unnecessary clothes shopping has worked itself into my bones and now I rarely ever want to shop. I do want some new things, but I think about those things more in terms of replacing what I have when certain pieces finally bite the dust.

Watching:

Not a lot. A few movies here and there. The Bear, slowly.

Michael and I are in the process of canceling all of our streaming accounts, and resubscribe to one at a time based on what we want to watch. We'll probably start with Apple TV to catch up on the latest season of Ted Lasso, the current season of The Morning Show, and hopefully sometime in the future, Severance. TV has become less a part of our hang out routine over the last few months, which makes any evening cuddled up with a good show extra sweet.

Writing:

Daily in my journal.
